“A vintage arcade”
The Route 66 Arcade Museum focuses on arcade games from 1935 through 1980. Although it contains primarily Electro-Mechanical (EM) games, there are about 15-20 early videogames on display (and ready to be played) as well.
You'd totally miss this place if you didn't know to look for it. Which would be a shame, because it was awesome, and such a treat! I visited Atlanta, IL in August of 2014 with my 9-month-old son, we were touring Route 66 and there was a Paul Bunyon statue in the town I wanted to get a picture of. Atlanta is super small, but pretty damn awesome.
The arcade museum has just one small sign outside the door, just off the main street. No one was there when we went in, there are loads of arcade games to play. Some require coins, others are just free.
They don't carry any games newer than 1981. All the arcades were in excellent condition.
The same people who own the Arcade Museum in McLean, Illinois also own this one.
I'm giving this a 5 because it looks awesome but unfortunately it's only open an hour a day at lunch time. Worth checking though while you take a pic of Paul bunion with a hot dog.
Was not open when we arrived.. but a short ride to the neighboring town of McLean is Arcadia... two buildings with tons of old pinball and video machines, and they have regular hours!
Loved this place! It was like traveling back in time. Everyone was super friendly!
