“Nestled in the Ponderosa Pine Forest”
The Maswik Lodge building and adjacent hotel’s rooms are contemporary in style, built in the 1960’s. The area however is rich cultural history. The original “Motor Lodge” was constructed in 1927 by Fred Harvey Company and the Santa Fe Railroad. Traveling by automobile to the parks was quickly becoming fashionable. Rather than having to travel by train or carriage, people could journey in their own automobile. This is how the term Motor-Lodge originated. In the 1940’s 36 cabins were added and 22 cabins were moved from Bright Angel. Many of the 120 cabins were demolished in the 1960’s and replaced by more contemporary two-story hotel rooms in 1968. The only architectural component remaining from historic lodge buildings are the original stone pillars. Maswik is named for a Hopi Kachina who is said to guard Grand Canyon. The Maswik Lodge today is a 250-room lodging complex nestled within several acres of Ponderosa pine forest. It is located just a short walk or quarter-mile from the canyon’s edge. The complex consists of a main lodge building that houses the Registration Desk, Gift Shop, Maswik Food Court and Pizza Pub. The lodging units are two story buildings that are spread to the North and South of the Main Lodge Building. Accommodations at Maswik Lodge Maswik North rooms are located in 12, two-story buildings. Great lodge. Clean and comfortable. Close to everything. We walked. But you can take buses everywhere. Dinning facilities in Maswik were fine. Huge cafeteria with many options. All the staff was fantastic, many were there only for the summer from all around the world. Definitely worth the time to ask where they are from and why they have chosen to work in the park.
BF & I stayed here during our Colorado Plateau vacation this year. We lucked out as when I checked before we came out everything was booked. We called the day we got in and we were able to get a cancelation. The lodge itself was dated, but it was very clean although the AC didn't seem to work very well. I would stay here again if we were in the Grand Canyon area.
Got the railway package that included a night at maswik. Bed was hard; pillows were as thin as the walls; room was 1/4 mile from lodge. However...the chipmunks and mule deer outside the patio door the next morning reminded me that it's all about nature. I do suggest bringing some snacks with you because the cafeteria is overpriced.
Clean, updated room and great location in the village. I can not imagine visiting the grand canyon south rim and not staying in the village. With a few stops it took us about an hour to get here from the entrance. I did feel the food in the food court was a bit over priced for the quality. Overall the staff was very friendly and helpful. The location is very convenient to the visitors center, market and other village items. I would recommend a small flash light due to parking issues, if you are walking from the main lodge to your room location at night it is dark. We did use our cell phones and were fine since we did have battery left in them.
It's ok for one night. No air condition. Good pizzas at the restaurant
