“Experience the beauty of the UP”

This small park located fourteen miles south of Baraga offers a boardwalk through a cedar swamp and a great view of the scenic Canyon Falls on the Sturgeon River. For a closer look at the river, take a cross-country hike or backpack camping trip through the nearby Sturgeon River Gorge Wilderness Area of the Ottawa National Forest. This area is primitive and undeveloped with few trails or access roads. Come prepared for a wilderness experience. The parking lot for this area is not plowed during winter. Just four miles west of Canyon Falls, The Michigan Department of Natural Resources manages the Baraga Plains Waterfowl Management Area. This area has jack pine forests interspersed with grassy openings and offers an additional wildlife viewing opportunity with different habitat and wildlife. The mature northern hardwood forest along Canyon Falls is a wonderful place to hear and view songbirds. Woodpecker species in particular are attracted to the large, old trees and dead snags found here. Ruffed grouse may also be seen or heard drumming during spring. The Sturgeon River Gorge Wilderness Area provides stunning views of this scenic river gorge and surrounding countryside. It is a great place to view fall colors and watch hawks and eagles soaring. White-tailed deer, black bear, ruffed grouse, and snowshoe hares and many of songbird species are common in the rolling forested hills of mixed hardwood and conifer trees.

Beautiful mild-energy hike. Do not stop walking when you get to a wooden fence. The trail keeps going along the canyon. Down this trail there's also an area where cliff jumping is popular, so don't get too worked up if you see a college kid hop over a ledge. However, you definitely should NOT try cliff jumping unless you're with someone who knows the river. The jump here is over 35' with variable current and a specific jump zone.

Nice place to stop for a rest and stretch the legs. They have pit toilets, drinking water, and picnic tables. I take the hour drive a couple times a year to see Canyon Falls. Water levels change here throughout the seasons depending on snow melt and rain fall. When water is low you can walk out on the rocks for some great family photos. Colors are beautiful here also in the fall of the year.

A must-see if you are passing nearby. This is a great opportunity to stretch your legs and see some beautiful sites. The trail is easy: not very long, but has lots of exposed roots and rocks.

We enjoyed stopping here. Don't know how far you can take the trail, but we went pretty far in to see the bigger falls and slightly passed. Lots of good photos. Would definitely visit again. Great walking trails, not too difficult.
