Natural Wonder

Our Take

These are not only the largest caverns in Eastern America... they are also the most accessible. Luray Caverns offers a structured, ticketed experience that runs like a well-oiled machine. Arrive early, since the tours depart every 20 minutes and are first-come, first-serve. The basic tour, which is the best deal, includes an automated concert on the world's largest musical instrument, The Great Stalacpipe Organ. Be sure to take a moment to appreciate that these caverns were formed over the course of millions of years. And remember a sweater or jacket, since it’s 54 degrees inside the caves year-round.

“Shenandoah geological wonder discovered in 1878”

The Wishing Well is a 6-foot deep pool of water at Luray Caverns where visitors toss coins and even paper money. Once a year, all of the coins are removed and donated to various charities. So far, since 1954 more than a million dollars has been collected and donated.  Since discovery in 1878 by a tinsmith and a local photographer, visitors by the millions have made Luray Caverns the most popular cave in Eastern America and an internationally acclaimed destination. Luray Caverns, a U.S. Natural Landmark, is noted for the profuse variety of formations and unsurpassed natural color. From well-lighted, paved walkways explore cathedral-sized rooms with ceilings 10 stories high, filled with towering stone columns and crystal-clear pools.  Also, hear the haunting sounds of the Great Stalacpipe Organ, the world’s largest musical instrument. This most unique one-of-a-kind instrument uses stalactites covering 3 1/2 acres of the surrounding caverns to produce tones of symphonic quality when electronically tapped by rubber-tipped mallets.  For more than 130 years, Luray Caverns has been renowned as one of the world's most spectacular natural wonders. A subterranean wonderland of magic and majesty, still as marvelously beautiful as described in the newspaper headlines over a century ago. Today, Luray Caverns attracts one-half million visitors annually from around the globe. In 2008, this venerable attraction hosted guests from throughout North America including all 50 U.S. states and 52 foreign nations. Russell Gurnee, noted author and former president of the Explorers Club, summarized in his book Discovery of Luray Caverns, Virginia, "Luray Caverns remains a tribute to the courage and vision of explorers who will persevere to seek out secrets of our world. In an imperfect human world it is reassuring that the discovery of these men of vision has been preserved for the enjoyment of this and succeeding generations.” Luray Caverns is truly America's underground classroom as the U.S. Natural Landmark is visited by more student tours each year than any other cave in the world. Thank yous come in many forms upon their return home. Luray Caverns is the Largest and Most Popular Cavern on the East Coast, just 90 minutes from Washington!  *Today's Hours: 9a-4p (5pm on the weekends)*

This is a great road trip - add to your agenda the nearby old car museum (optimal kitch) and walking maze!

SO gorgeous. And that wishing well is crystal clear. It doesn't look 6 feet deep at all. The pictures i have from this trip are some of my very favorites.

I've visited Luray Caverns about 4 times and each time I see something new. I wish they didn't make you wait so long in the "shop" before entering the caverns...we've almost left because of the wait. The caverns are WONDERFUL! Absolutely amazing. Bring a jacket, it's cool underground.

Best cavern I’ve seen. The set up is very professional and it’s worth it’s $30 price tag. Right now it’s a self tour but that was fine. There’s so much to see. Definitely recommend.

The caverns were absolutely beautiful. Our tour guide was great & the family had a blast in the garden maze. Rain and all, it was a memorable day.

These caves are really beautiful. Very touristy though, but at least you know you won't get lost.

What an awesome stop! This is the biggest cavern we've been too. They had knowledgable guides throughout the cavern. They used to have guided tours before covid and you can tell the guides miss doing the tours. This was a self-guided tour. Looks kinda touristy - but well worth it! Even the car museum was fun to visit (included with your ticket). Took about an hour to go through the cavern and half an hour for the toy and car museum. Fantastic stop.
