The complex of buildings is often described as one of the greatest projects of the Depression Era, and it’s still a destination for tourists to this day, particularly for Radio City, the view from the Top of the Rock, the shopping, and for the tree and ice rink at Christmas. The art deco details on the buildings are to die for. And, if you’re a comedy geek, you can always hang out in the NBC gift shop until someone offers you tickets to see a dress rehearsal of one of your favorite live late-night shows.
“a monument to America”
Rockefeller Center is a complex of 19 commercial buildings covering 22 acres (89,000 m2) between 48th and 51st streets in New York City, United States. Built by the Rockefeller family, it is located in the center of Midtown Manhattan, spanning the area between Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1987. Rockefeller Center was named after John D. Rockefeller, Jr., who leased the space from Columbia University in 1928 and developed it from 1930. Rockefeller initially planned a syndicate to build an opera house for the Metropolitan Opera on the site, but changed his mind after the stock market crash of 1929 and the Metropolitan's continual delays to hold out for a more favorable lease, causing Rockefeller to move forward without them. Rockefeller stated "It was clear that there were only two courses open to me. One was to abandon the entire development. The other to go forward with it in the definite knowledge that I myself would have to build it and finance it alone."
There is no view of NYC better than the top of the Roc. There are shops on the bottom level of the building and you can get a guided tour of the building as well. Both the tour and the ability to go out on the top observation deck cost money. The observation deck is about 30 bucks for adults and the tour is around 15 or so. You CAN get a discount if you buy both as a "combo". Ice skating outside is a once in a lifetime experience for out-of-towners. Don't think that it will be jam packed or that there will be a wait to skate either. You go inside, rent skates, put em on in the locker room, and you're out on the ice before you know it!
Hard to find...yet famously beautiful....
If you are in New York and you don't visit Rockefeller Center then you will miss out for sure.
This place, known as "the top of the rock" except from shopping activities, it offers you the best views that you can get of New York city.
When you stand at the top, you feel glory and power, as if you are holding a piece of the earth in your hands.
During the night it is even better. Little lights all over New York look like fireflies in a jungle. I suggest you take your cameras with you so you can capture these magnificent moments.
Plaza around the outside is a nice place to hang out on a summer day. Fountains, sights, a little break from the 5th avenue traffic is welcome.
Grab a dog from a vendor nearby and chill out for a bit.
Fantastically beautiful building. Screams art deco from every angle. The inside is just as beautiful as the outside and is free to walk around in. When I think of New York I think of this building.
What an amazing view! We'd been recommended by friends to go up to the Top of the Rock over Empire State Building as its slightly cheaper & you get to see the Empire State Building as part of the spectacular view. Well worth it, a must see.
Only downside, not the easiest to find as little to no signage, however staff are very happy to help point you in the right direction.
It's like the Sears Tower or any other skyscraper but a much shorter wait. Beautiful view of NY from the top here. I feel like it's under-rated, but I highly recommend!
An absolute must do! Scheduled my visit right at sundown and it was one of the most breath taking views I've ever beheld in my entire life. If you have to chose between all the sites New York has to offer, I highly recommend putting this in your Top 3.
