“Top Bookstore in America!”
Welcome to Klindt's Books. If you are looking for mystery or romance, inspiration, or a specific cooking recipe, Klindt's will help you find it. As you browse through the original bookshelves and slightly squeaky, wooden floors, you will find a wide selection of titles - both new and out of print. We have a wonderful assortment of stationery, cards, journals, calendars and more - visit us to check out our latest inventory or place an order through our site. As the oldest bookstore in Oregon, we are proud to serve the communities of The Dalles, the Columbia River Gorge and the Northwest. The bookstore first opened its doors in 1870. Inwer Nickelsen, a native of the Island of Fohr in the Frisian Islands, near the coast of Northern Germany, decided to settle in The Dalles and open the area’s first bookstore. The original location was across the street, but the fire of 1891 forced Nickelsen to move to the current location. Today, Klindt’s Books is a cornerstone of the Columbia Gorge. Throughout the year, Klindt’s hosts authors from around the globe for book readings and signings, and supports other local events. Like all of the owners and staff members at Klindt’s Books, Edna Weigelt was an integral part of the bookstore’s history and folklore. After the Weigelt's sold the store to the Klindts in 1981, Edna agreed to stay on for a year to help Philip and Linda through the transition. However, her love for the store and the community turned one year into several. Edna worked at the bookstore until she was 91. Is Edna still with us? Even after her passing in 2003, signs of her presence still remain in Klindt’s Books. The next time you visit Klindt’s, ask us about Edna.
