“it's so cool, it's ice cold!”
The Exit Glacier area is the only part of the park accessible by road. Here you can explore the trails, walk very close to an active glacier, or take a ranger-led walk. It is a place where you can witness up close how glaciers re-shape a landscape and learn how plant life reclaims the barren rocky land exposed by a glacier's retreat.
If you have ever wanted to get up close to a glacier, Exit Glacier makes it easy. It is one of the only glaciers in Alaska that you can practically drive right up to.
There are different trails along the glacier that take you close enough to touch the cool blue ice. They all start at the Exit Glacier Nature Center. You can hike trails alone or join a guided hike. Try the Exit Glacier Overlook Trail, which is a 2.5-mile loop with amazing views of the glacier. The Harding Ice Field Hike is one of the longest and more difficult trails at 9.2 miles.
We think a visit here is one of the best things to do in Seward, Alaska!
The hike to Exit Glacier and Harding Ice Field is out of this world. What a great hike, straight up all the way, and the experience is amazing. Check out more details here on my blog
There are not that many glaciers that you can just walk right up to. This is a phenomenal experience. Come prepared with some water and know what routes are available. There is a pretty easy walk up to the glacier, but for just a few more miles up, you can go all the way to the edge of the Harding Ice Field. We got there too late in the day to complete that loop (which we TOTALLY regret). If you look for a little side path in the wash-out basin you can climb around the side if the water is low and make it to the terminus of the glacier. Totally awesome.
