“hidden away in a secluded little glen”
This is a scenic waterfall hidden away in a secluded little glen. If you are visiting the park and have the time stop by and visit. It is about a 20 minute walk to the falls and you will pass the small Blue Hen Falls on the way. Make sure you visit Brandywine Falls before spending time on this one. Buttermilk Falls is in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. This is one of the newest national parks, located just south of Cleveland. The area is well inhabited, but the park still contains many interesting natural sites. This is a small but scenic waterfall. It is downstream of Blue Hen Falls. There is a rough trail that crosses the stream three times. There are no bridges so you have to do some rock hopping. Spring Creek never seems to have much water, so you should have no problem. It had been raining heavily during the week prior to my visit and every other waterfall and river in the area was swollen, but Blue Hen and Buttermilk Falls still had only modest flows.
We only went to Blue Hen Falls and while it is small it is still absolutely stunning and serene. Able bodied people can climb down the hill and actually stand at the bottom of the falls and walk across the stones, even our dogs were able to make it. The rock is very slippery though so take caution!
Was posed when we tried to go :(
Very nice hike and the falls are wonderful.
Buttermilk Falls is WAY more interesting than the Blue Hen Falls that you see first on the trail. There's no clear signage, but you continue on the trail past the sign that says "End of Trail - Blue Hen Falls." Since it was summer and the stream level was low, we walked down the creekbed most of the way, but took the trail back, which is clear and well-maintained. The falls is a great sight, looks like a former dam, and mostly made of slate.
