Natural Wonder

Our Take

The centerpiece of this state park is (naturally) Cumberland Falls, a 68-foot cascade on the Kentucky River. It's renowned for being one of the few places in the world where "moonbows" (rainbows produced by moonlight rather than the sun) can be seen, typically during a full moon. But fear not if you're not planning your visit based on the lunar calendar; It's still a good-looking waterfall in broad daylight, too.

“home to a rare moonbow”

Cumberland Falls State Resort Park is a park located just southwest of Corbin, Kentucky and is contained entirely within the Daniel Boone National Forest. The park encompasses 1,657 acres and is named for its major feature, 68-foot-tall Cumberland Falls. The falls are one of the few places in the western hemisphere where a moonbow can frequently be seen on nights with a full moon. The park is also the home of 44-foot Eagle Falls. The section of the Cumberland River that includes the falls was designated a Kentucky Wild River by the Kentucky General Assembly through the Office of Kentucky Nature Preserves' Wild Rivers System. The forest in the park is also a dedicated State Nature Preserve.

Perfect road trip stop to stretch your legs. Less than a mile of walking will get you to see the waterfall from several angles.

I added this stop while on a road trip from Minneapolis to Gatlinburg. The drive from the freeway to the state park is about 15 miles AND it was well worth it. The waterfall is big and beautiful, there are several lookout/photo opportunity points, bathrooms, small concession, and a gift shop. It was a great way to stop, walk, stretch, bathroom break and get some beautiful nature time in! Definitely worth the detour!

Beautiful stop for anyone driving through the area. We have went through the area for years to go to FL and only this year found this natural beauty. Great place to stretch the legs and see some gorgeous natural settings.

Worthwhile short stop with little walking; there are stairs. Beautiful winding roads leading to and from. Camping with restaurant.
