Sea Lion Caves is a privately owned wildlife preserve and bird sanctuary (since 1932) centrally located just 11 miles north of Florence on the beautiful and rugged Oregon Coast. Sea Lion Caves is proud to be part of the Oregon/Cape Perpetua Marine Reserve helping to protect the local marine animals and marine environment. Sea Lion Caves is America's largest sea cave and the year-round home of the Steller sea lion, but sea lions are not always in the Cave. They are wild animals and we are not a zoo so these protected animals come and go as they please, as is their nature. Winter months will usually find hundreds of sea lions in the Cave and when spring arrives, breeding and birthing time, the sea lions will move from the Cave to the rookery areas (the rock ledges out in front of the Cave) and will remain there through the summer.
Kids had fun and saw lots of sea lions. Cost is expensive for a family of teens, since they all get charged adult prices($14). It was nice on a weekday to not worry about crossing Hwy 101, which is always scary. Be warned of the smell. Fudge is handmade with a variety of flavors.
It was pretty expensive($14/adult) for what it is. It was cool to see, but not worth what it cost for a family of 5. Parking is downright dangerous! Its located across the street with no tunnel, bridge, or even a crosswalk to get you across busy highway 101. Its also located on a blind curve so you must run across the highway and take your chances.
As a native Oregonian, the Sea Lion Caves is always on the list of where to take friends who have never seen it. Today Ryan and I enjoyed our visit, especially because the weather was fabulous!! But I must say, both crossing Hiway 101 as a pedestrian from the parking lot and pulling out of the lot in your car is TAKING YOUR LIFE IN YOUR HANDS!! It is soooo very dangerous!! I think it's a law suit waiting to happen; and a fatality too!!
No sealions for us either :( they gave us a one year rain check to come back. Although the caves were still cool to see
we didn't see any sea lions, there are supposedly hundreds during winter
Our 8 and 10 year old daughters thought this was a great place. It is a bit expensive, but they got to see lots of sea lions.
We were there when there was no sea lions in the caves. Saw a couple floating off in the distance. Pretty expensive even though they discounted us for not seeing any sea lions. However we Saw whale off the coast that made it all worth it. A bit of a tourist trap.
Loved this! So many sea lions like all the pictures! My kids loved this too. It’s right off the highway. You can’t miss it!
This was a little pricier than we anticipated, but was great to see the sea lions. We also saw three grey whales swimming outside the cave area and it was fun to see them come up for a breath.
Pretty cool we came on a trip in July at peak sea lion season. A must do if your on the coastal road trip.
