“all-american road!”
State Route 1 (SR 1) is a major north-south state highway that runs along most of the Pacific Coastline of the U.S. state of California. Highway 1 has several portions designated as either Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), Cabrillo Highway, Shoreline Highway, or Coast Highway. Its southern terminus is at Interstate 5 (I-5) near Dana Point in Orange County and its northern terminus is at U.S. Highway 101 (US 101) near Leggett in Mendocino. Highway 1 also at times runs concurrently with US 101, most notably through a 54-mile (87 km) stretch in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties, and across the Golden Gate Bridge. The highway is famous for running along some of the most beautiful coastlines in the USA, leading to its designation as an All-American Road. In addition to providing a scenic route to numerous attractions along the coast, the route also serves as a major thoroughfare in the Greater Los Angeles Area, the San Francisco Bay Area, and several other coastal urban areas.
when i was about 15 (34 years ago) my family and i made this trip. the scenery was nice for about 30 minutes, then it got monotonous. once you get on this road YOU CAN'T GET OFF!! YOU ARE TRAPPED!!! there is nowhere to stop. you just wind along. in and out with trucks barreling towards you in the other direction on the narrow windy road. and it goes on FOREVER. i found it extremely unpleasant!!
Do you love driving and have never visited the Californian Coast? Then one of the best driving routes that you will ever drive through in your life starts from Orange County and goes all the way north to Leggett in Mendocino.
The State Route 1 (SR 1) which is being combined with US Highway 101 (US 101) is probably the most scenic driving route in the USA and could turned up to be an ideal holiday suggestion for 10-15 days during which you will have the opportunity to enjoy some of the most picturesque views in the country as well as stop by countless times to visit places of unique natural beauty and great history!
I drove all the way through for 21 days, and i spent the holidays of a lifetime!!! Strongly suggested for honeymoon, i bet your other half will be very pleasantly surprised and this amazing road trip will even further make your love life more passionate !!!
We did this trip last week. It is beautiful, but I wouldn’t start it until Santa Barbara. We were stuck in traffic out of LA for hours. What should have taken 2 hours took 5. I’ve done this trip a couple of times. The traffic was horrendous this time. In BIG Sur area there was a life taking accident. The turns are tight and the cliff drop is huge. Be careful and pay attention. It is beautiful….I’d start up north and head south for more coastal stops. We couldn’t make so many because there was no parking and more.
