“Psychedelic Pedestrian Bridge in Madrid!”
This bridge is part of the 25-mile High Trestle Trail in Madrid, Iowa, which opened in 2011. The whole trail runs from Ankeny to Woodward, Iowa. The trail follows along the old Union Pacific Railroad freight line route. After securing funding for the paved trail in 2003, construction begain in 2005 and the trail was completed in 2008. The bridge was completed in 2011: "The last portion to be completed was the trestle bridge from which the trail derives its name. A $1.75 million grant from Vision Iowa, a project of the Iowa Economic Development Authority, funded the construction of a new bridge deck designed by RDG Dahlquist Art Studios and structural engineering firm Shuck-Briston." High Trestle Bridge, though originally built as a railroad bridge in the 1970s, has undergone a significant facelift in the past five years. It spans the Des Moines River, and is crossed by about 3,000 people every week. It's a 13-story high, half mile bridge that is meant to resemble a mine shaft, in honor of the Italian immigrants who worked in the nearby mines. Every night it's illuminated until midnight. - Roadtrippers
This bridge was amazing! Close to Des Moines but set in a quiet little town, the bridge itself was hard to find (not on Raven Ln like the description said, but off of 210, 1/2 mile out of town) but the locals were so very helpful and friendly! As for the bridge itself, the view was amazing, if not super windy! I visited during the day to see the scenery and at night to see the lights. It was pretty crowded with Bikers after twilight, but they were all very respectful and overall nice people. And the lights?!? Words just cannot describe how cool it was to be surrounded by all that neon! I'll definitely be back!
At 13 miles high and 1/2 mile long, the High Trestle Trail is one of the largest trail bridges in the world. Enjoy a twilight ride on this trail to see its signature blue lights, and be sure to grab a cold beer afterward at the Flat Tire Lounge.
This deserves a five star rating. A little hike, but not to be missed if you find yourself near Des Moines ! Ill definitely return to see the lights at night
You'll want to definitely see this bridge at night when it's illuminated.
