Leach Botanical Gardens

Leach Botanical Garden is located in a woodland hollow along Johnson Creek in southeast Portland. This botanical garden specializes in preserving the original Leach collection as well as introducing Northwest native plants through educational programs, conservation, and community involvement. The collection of more than 2,000 special hybrids, cultivars (including NW natives and the Leach original collection) can be enjoyed on a self-guided tour that winds around the Manor House and along Johnson Creek. There are no pristine paths or sterile landscaping. Instead, the Leaches combined exotic plants with native ones in order to achieve an overflowing environment. As one walks through the grounds, one sees towering fir trees, lush shrubbery, and fantastic wildflowers. Leach Botanical Garden has often been referred to as "an oasis in an urban setting." The Leach family has indeed left a living legacy for all of us to enjoy. It is the mission of Leach Botanical Garden to maintain and enhance living collections of plants for the purpose of education, research, and conservation and to preserve the legacy of the garden’s founders, John and Lilla Leach.
