“the world's highest hill”
Cavanal Hill in Poteau, Oklahoma is known as “The World's Highest Hill", falling one foot short of mountain status at 1,999 feet high. The hill, once a landmark for French and Native Americans, is now home to walk/run events, mountain bike races, and the famous Cavanal Hill Killer 8k Walk/Run. Make the trek or drive the blacktopped road to the top and enjoy the phenomenal view of the Poteau River valley and surrounding area from several lookout points along the edge of route. From these points, you can see nearly two thirds of the county, as well as a wonderful view of Wister Lake, Sugar Loaf Mountain, the Poteau Mountains, and the Ouachita National Forest. Spend time with your family in the picnic area and have your picture taken atop the world's highest hill! Fun fact: the top of Cavanal is about 20º cooler in the summer than the valley below. From the north, take Hwy 59/271, then turn right onto Hughes Drive. Proceed to the next stop sign, then turn right onto Witteville Rd. Follow for 1.2 miles until you reach a Y in the road. Take it left to the top of the hill.
If your heading this way it's definitely worth at least driving by. Such a beautiful sight!
