“A shining beacon for Greater Reading”
The Pagoda, located atop Mt. Penn is an historical landmark that has served as a shining beacon for Greater Reading for more than 100 years. It is owned, loved and cared for by the city and citizens of Reading, Pennsylvania. Visitors from around the world come to see the Pagoda. This out-of-place and yet extraordinary building has an unforgettable view and is a comforting sight for many, especially the red glow of lights at night. There is a Cafe here open at weekends only.
Great spot to watch the sunset , wonderful views and if you stop by on the weekend you can enjoy a snack inside at the cafe or go to the top floor to look out over Reading.
Took Skyline Drive (not The Skyline Drive) in Reading to get to the Pagoda which is closed having construction work done in front of it including sewer and electrical work. Had a lot of fog so was unable to see any distance but the construction workers let me walk around the building. Worth a drive but maybe wait till work is completed.
Temporarily closed due to Covid
Open Saturday and Sundays 12-5pm. Lights shine every night. On xmas eve at 9pm the lights flash to tell the children of Reading that Santa is on his way. Not ada accessible inside the structure. But the hike up the stairs to the once open air top floor, gives great views of the skyline and downtown Reading. If you have binoculars and a great camera be sure to bring them. It does have those big binoculars that you pay 50 cents to view the skyline. Facing the city, if you turn all the way to the right, and look back yup further on the hill, you can see the William Penn memorial fire tower.
Free to climb the stairs, but they ask for a dollar donation per person. Interesting history, originally intended as a hotel, but it never came to be. Still trying to figure out how to post pictures here. I got some good shots of this one.
Beautiful but needs upkeep and maintenance.
Nifty little place to stop by. The inside was closed the day I went, but it is definitely a good place to take a break on a road trip, or watch a sunset.
